Jonathan Pinckney

Jonathan Pinckney is Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Texas at Dallas. He was formerly Director of Applied Research at the Horizons Project, where his work focused on countering “democratic backsliding”, and a Senior Researcher at the United States Institute of Peace. He is the author of “From Dissent to Democracy: The Promise and Peril of Civil Resistance Transitions”. His research has been widely published in academic and popular venues, and he regularly consults with activists, civil society, and government agencies on matters related to democracy, nonviolent resistance, and peacebuilding.

A robust civic education initiative builds understanding of how democratic backsliding works, can dispel incomplete or inaccurate views of democracy and inform students of the importance of institutional constraints.
