John Holmwood
Emeritus Professor of Sociology, University of Nottingham
John Holmwood has taught at universities in Australia, USA, and Britain. He was President of the British Sociological Association between 2012-14 and co-founder of the Campaign for the Public University, set up in 2010 to counter university reforms in England.
He is editor of “A Manifesto for the Public University” (Bloomsbury, 2011), co-author (with Therese O’Toole) of “Countering Extremism in British Schools? The Truth about the Birmingham Trojan Horse Affair” (Policy Press, 2018) and co-author (with G.K. Bhambra) of “Colonialism and Modern Social Theory” (Polity, 2021). He is a leading critic of the UK government’s counter extremism strategy, Prevent, and its impact on free speech.
Part of the problem is how the university is being constructed in the public imagination and that’s very different from the way the university is in terms of the experience of most students.
